Toy Safety Recalls

By: Liam

There is a growing fear that consumer demand for cheap products, combined with corporate negligence in regard to product safety, is putting children's health and safety at risk. One of the top consumer stories of the year is the increase in toy recalls, proliferating especially the perception that the cause is Chinese manufacturing problems. One toy, named Australia's toy of the year, is under recall for becoming the equivalent of the date rape drug when ingested. This is highly alarming since anyone with young children knows they often lick their toys, or put them in their mouths.

The number of recalls related to design issues is apparently higher than the number caused by shoddy manufacturing. In any event, problems with dangerous toys weigh heavily on the minds of parents and care givers. Educational materials, CDs and DVDs are probably going to be hot items as we all try to be safe and careful this year.

You may want to consider buying fewer toys of better quality. For information on the latest recalls visit http://www.healthycanadians.gc.ca/pr-rp/index_e.php ( in Canada) or http://www.recalls.gov/cpsc.html (in the USA).

PS. Please take a good look at your children's toys. Toys with loose or small parts can be dangerous whether they are recalled or not.
