Christmas at home has a special meaning for many, but you certainly don’t have to stay home this holiday season. Holidays away can range from the traditional to something completely new and different.
For some of us, Christmas could be a good time to get away from it all. Most of us have time off of work, school is out, and there are often few professional or social commitments to keep you home between Christmas and New Years. If you are not looking forward to another holiday at home consider packing your bags and heading on a Christmas Getaway.
The trick to not feeling deprived out of your holidays is to plan an experience that everyone will enjoy. First, if this is a group vacation, sit down and discuss the things that each feels make the holidays special. Then try and incorporate those wishes into your getaway. Can’t imagine Christmas without snow? Then stay away from a tropical island! Children in particular have very specific ideas about what should happen during the holidays so be careful to avoid their disappointment.
Or maybe you are a city dweller living in a warm climate and have always dreamed of celebrating a real snow covered Christmas. Why not consider renting a cottage or a room in a country inn in an area full of hometown Christmas festivities? Enjoy the town Christmas tree lighting ceremony, ice skating a the local pond; visiting Santa’s cottage and having your family’s picture taken; or drinking hot chocolate near an open fire on Christmas Eve night.
Going away for Christmas doesn’t have to entail a holiday filled with a frenzy of sightseeing and travel. It can be a wonderful time to sit back, out up your feet and enjoy a holiday filled with relaxation and old-fashioned fun.
Here are a few ideas to ask yourself when considering where to go this holiday season:
-Is our family looking for a traditional holiday experience or something totally different and unconventional?
-Are we looking for a warm weather or cold weather location?
-Do we want to relax or be on-the-go?
-Will our getaway include our immediate family only, or should we try to include extended family and friends?
After you decide the type of vacation you want, here are a few ideas that can get you started in your search.
-If you’re looking for a traditional Christmas, consider a visit to New England, where the weather is normally cold and snowy (great for skiing, ice skating and sledding), and the lifestyle is slower. If a hotel seems too impersonal, consider a bed and breakfast facility that features tree decorating, Christmas caroling and a formal Christmas Dinner.
-Some other great places to enjoy a more traditional Christmas experience include: a Midwest farm; Lancaster County, Pennsylvania; or even picturesque England.
-Those who want a less traditional Christmas getaway may enjoy a mountain ski vacation; a Caribbean cruise; a chance relive their childhood days in Disney World Florida; or even a train tour through the Christmas markets of Germany.
With an almost infinite range of options available, it really doesn’t matter where you decide to spend your holidays this year. The important thing to remember is to incorporate the things that you and your family wants and need to in order to make it a memorable Christmas.
